Old electrical and electronic products contain recyclable materials and therefore do not belong in household waste! For this reason, you, as a consumer, are obliged under the German Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act ("Law on the placing on the market, taking back and environmentally friendly disposal of electrical and electronic equipment") to ensure that it is disposed of properly and separately from household waste. To make this clear, since 2005 all electrical and electronic products brought onto the market have been marked with the symbol of a crossed-out garbage can, as a visible sign of resource conservation and environmental protection.
The Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act regulates what happens to the collected electrical and electronic products: They are to be collected and transported in such a way that no dangerous substances can be released en route. Certified disposal companies treat the products, render pollutants harmless and recover raw materials in complex processes, which are fed back into the production process as secondary raw materials. For suitable old products, the legislator also prescribes an examination as to whether reuse would be possible. Ideally, the old products can be refurbished and reused as good used ones. Second-hand smartphones, PCs and laptops in particular may be suitable for a second or third life. In this respect, professional collection and disposal of electrical and electronic products protects the climate and environment and also protects the earth's increasingly scarce resources.
